The internet brings everything you could possibly want directly to your desktop; everything from books to groceries; and now, cat insurance has joined the long list of amenities that can be found online. Some brokers are making it easy to purchase their brick and mortar versions of this investment from their websites; other firms are based solely online, and sell over the internet only. There are both advantages and disadvantages to both, and we'll look at some of these in a moment.

Health insurance for our pets is becoming more popular than ever these days, thanks to the rising cost of veterinary medicine and the ever growing numbers of people who are willing to spend more on health care for their pets. But pet care is expensive, and, much like medical insurance for humans, the legal tangles can be a pain. This is where purchasing your cat insurance online can be better; pet insurance may be cheaper to purchase online. And online insurers may make copies of their policies publicly available (some even put easy links on their home pages!), so that all you have to do is click and scroll to read through their terms and conditions. (I know, I know. You hate reading small print online. Who doesn't? But get over it. Remember, this is your beloved cat we're talking about here, and insurance may make the difference between being able to have necessary health procedures done and not being able to have them done.)

However, the internet is also a place where scams flourish, so some careful research will be in order if you look there for your insurance needs. Be especially wary of sites offering you 'discounts' or 'special offers' on insurance; these are rarely legitimate. When they are, they often have steep fees and other ways of making up the 'discounted' money. Know what you're getting into before you hand over your cash. Check them out with the Better Business Bureau before signing anything. (And remember to never follow links from a website to the Better Business Bureau; type their address directly into your address bar.)

If you have a trusted friend who has purchased cat insurance before, especially if they were pleased with the service, then ask them where they bought it, and consider using that company yourself. In the volatile world of internet insurance, there are no guarantees that you'll be as pleased with the company as they were--but word of mouth and the recommendations of friends are still the best ways to go when you're looking to purchase anything, insurance included.

There are many risks and many dangers involved in purchasing any kind of insurance online; caveat emptor if you try. But, if you do your homework and look around carefully, the internet can be an excellent and affordable place to purchase your next cat insurance policy.
